Family-Focused Therapy for Young Adults

I recently had the pleasure of being a guest on the "Mastering Counseling" podcast with host Becky Coplen. As a licensed mental health counselor and owner of Carino Mental Health Counseling Services, I was excited to share my experiences and approach to working with young people and their families.

During our conversation, I discussed several key aspects of my practice:

  • My journey from working in an inpatient psychiatric hospital to establishing my own practice focused on teenagers and young adults

  • The importance of involving families in the therapy process, even for college-aged clients

  • My use of genograms as a tool to understand family dynamics and generational patterns

  • How I combine family systems theory with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to provide comprehensive treatment

  • My approach to managing client load and maintaining work-life balance as a therapist and mother

One of the highlights of the episode was explaining how I integrate various therapeutic modalities, including Gottman Method, family systems theory, and CBT, to create a tailored approach for each client.

I also had the opportunity to introduce my summer intern, Sabrina, who joined us for the podcast. Her presence allowed us to discuss the importance of mentorship and exposure to the field for aspiring mental health professionals.

To hear more about my practice, therapeutic techniques, and insights into working with young people and their families, I encourage you to listen to the full episode. You'll gain a deeper understanding of how family-focused therapy can make a significant impact on mental health treatment.
